At Witton Church Walk we promote the fundamental British Values

At Witton Church Walk we are clear that we have a responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and celebrated throughout the school. The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated annually and shared with all school staff. At Witton Church Walk, these values are reinforced regularly and in a number of ways.

A number of curriculum areas enable us to further the understanding of these concepts including SMSC, RE and PSHE. These subjects provide opportunities to deepen and develop pupils’ understanding and embrace these concepts with enthusiasm. They are then able to demonstrate a good understanding of how these values can be applied to their own lives.

Witton Church Walk ensures that our pupils have the opportunity to experiences range of opportunities both within and beyond their own local community. This includes participation in:

* Community sporting events

* Church of England School

* Visits to places of worship

We celebrate weekly with worshipful singing and religious assembly. We also celebrate our diversity, similarities and differences by embracing different cultures and celebrating what it means to be British.

In accordance with The Department for Education, we aim to actively promote British values in our school to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

• Individual Liberty

We help children to remember the British Values through the thumb and finger model

Thumb – Democracy – to agree or disagree to express our opinion.

Index finger – Rule of Law - pointing 

Middle finger – Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs – tallest finger pointing to God.

Ring Finger – Mutual respect – wedding ring – respect for other people

Little finger – Individual Liberty – Gives freedom to express ourselves and make our own choices.

Mutual Respect and the Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs.

Respect is a key school value and is one of our Golden Rules, around which pivots much of the work of the school. We pay explicit attention to this as part of our RE, PHSE and SMSC curriculum.

Democracy

The children at Witton Church Walk see democracy demonstrated in a variety of ways. We view this as an essential part of successful team working. Democracy is a whole school value. Our Ambassadors are required to demonstrate the importance of this during their interviews and when they meet to clarify that respect for others and fairness is a key aspect of their role.

Rule of Law

Pupils at Witton Church Walk are familiar with this concept as we have strong values that infuse the work of our school. They are also familiar with the concept through discussions in assemblies and in class and by understanding, that different religions have different celebrations.

Respect for Self and others

We facilitate open discussion on about self-respect and self-worth in relation to the every individual’s value so that our pupils see that they are all important in their own right. Children are strongly encouraged to develop independence in learning and to think for themselves.

Respect is a core school value and includes self-respect, respect for family, friends, and other groups, our community, the UK, the wider world and its people and the environment. Pupils are also taught the importance of respect for the fallen through work on Remembrance Day including observing two minutes silence.

Individual Liberty

Pupils at Witton Church Walk are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Pupils are given the freedom to make choices, including choice of challenge, how to record their work or by choosing to participate in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities.
